Guacamole is an avocado-based dip common in Mexican cuisine and widely enjoyed as a dip, condiment, or side. Its simple ingredients make it fresh, nutritious, and easy to customize.
Key Ingredients
- Avocados
- Lime juice
- Tomatoes
- Cilantro
- Jalapeños
- Garlic
- Onions
- Salt

How to Pick Ripe Avocados
- Check the color: Ripe avocados are usually dark green to nearly black.
- Gently squeeze: A ripe avocado yields to light pressure without feeling mushy. Hard avocados need more time; very soft ones may be overripe.
- Inspect the stem: Remove the small stem cap—green underneath indicates ripeness; brown suggests overripe or spoiled flesh.
- Avoid blemishes: Large bruises or soft spots can mean the fruit is past its best.

How to Prevent Guacamole From Turning Brown
Oxidation causes guacamole to brown when exposed to air. Try these tips to keep it green and fresh:
- Press plastic wrap to the surface: Laying plastic directly on the guacamole minimizes air contact.
- Add citrus: Lime juice in the recipe helps slow oxidation and brightens flavor.
- Keep an avocado pit in the container: Placing the pit on the surface can help slow browning in that area.
- Store airtight: Use a tight-sealing container and press plastic wrap onto the guacamole before sealing to reduce air exposure.

Substitutions and Variations
- Smoked salt instead of regular salt for a deeper, smoky note.
- Diced mango or pineapple for a sweet-tangy fruit twist.
- Add cayenne or serrano peppers for extra heat.
- Mix in plain Greek yogurt for a creamier, higher-protein version.
- Combine mashed avocado and hummus for a different flavor and texture.
- Crispy bacon pieces for a smoky, savory addition.
Can I Make It Ahead of Time / How to Store
Prepare the guacamole and press plastic wrap directly onto its surface before sealing in an airtight container. This reduces air exposure and slows browning. You may still see small browned spots—simply scoop them away before serving. Chill and use within 24 hours for best flavor, stirring and adjusting lime and salt if needed before serving.
How Long It Will Last in the Fridge
Stored properly, guacamole will keep for 3–4 days in the refrigerator, though flavor and color are best within the first 24–48 hours.
Can You Freeze It
Freezing is possible but may alter texture—thawed guacamole can become slightly watery or grainy. If freezing, store in a freezer-safe airtight container and thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Stir well and adjust seasoning before serving.

Pair With These Recipes
Guacamole pairs beautifully with tortilla chips, grilled proteins, tacos, rice, and salads. Try it alongside low-carb tortilla chips, shrimp or fish tacos, cilantro-lime rice, or smoked salsa for a complete meal.
