- How to Make Lavender Spray Recipe
This summer we added lavender to our garden. In California it grew easily, but here in Minnesota we planted annual lavender and dried plenty for projects. I’ve been using the harvest to make lavender spray for pillows and rooms — and I now keep a bottle in every room. When I sprayed my daughter’s pillow she inhaled and immediately yawned, which convinced me it’s worth keeping around for bedtime.
This lavender pillow spray is quick to make with just a few ingredients. Below is a straightforward, adaptable method so you can make a batch that fits your bottle size.
What is Lavender Spray?
Lavender room spray is an aromatherapy mist made from lavender essential oil, typically combined with a carrier such as witch hazel and water. It freshens fabrics and living spaces and is often used as a pillow spray to promote relaxation and better sleep. Research indicates lavender scent can improve sleep quality and feelings of restfulness. Use this spray on pillows, linens, in a room, or lightly on clothing.

Ingredients Needed
- Witch Hazel – Helps emulsify the essential oil with water so the scent lasts longer. Use a pure witch hazel when possible.
- Distilled Water – Distilled water reduces impurities and helps the mixture last longer.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Use pure lavender essential oil. Start with about 15–30 drops depending on bottle size and scent preference.
- Optional: Dried Lavender – Adds a visual touch and a subtle extra scent if you have dried sprigs from your garden.
*Recipe Tip
Use spray bottles that protect the oil from light if you plan to store the spray long-term — amber or blue glass is ideal. Clear glass bottles look pretty with dried lavender inside if you prefer the visual effect.
How to Make Lavender Spray
- Add Witch Hazel
Fill your spray bottle about halfway with witch hazel.

- Add Distilled Water
Top up the bottle with distilled water, leaving a little space at the top for the essential oils and to shake the bottle.

- Add Essential Oils
Add roughly 15–30 drops of lavender essential oil depending on bottle size and how strong you like it. Start with 15, cap the bottle, and shake to blend.

- Optional: Add Dried Lavender
Drop in a sprig or two of dried lavender for a decorative touch and subtle extra aroma.

FAQs
Spray directly onto pillows and linens for the best effect, since the scent clings well to fabric. You can also mist the room or lightly spray clothing or skin, avoiding eyes and sensitive areas.
Witch hazel helps emulsify the oil and water. If you don’t have it, you can use rubbing alcohol or high-proof vodka as an alternative, though witch hazel is gentler.
No. Dried lavender is optional and mainly decorative. The essential oil provides most of the fragrance and relaxing properties.
Storage Instructions
Store your lavender spray in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. When kept in suitable bottles, the scent typically lasts up to about 6 months, though it may gradually fade after several months.
