Three-year-olds are a special kind of entertaining — equal parts challenging and endlessly funny. A’s sense of humor keeps improving and she’s become an expert at poking fun at the adults around her. My partner and I have always built our relationship around laughter, so it’s no surprise our little one follows suit.
Each night at bedtime we read a story and say prayers. I usually lead by thanking God for parts of her day, then ask who she’d like to pray for. She lists family members and sometimes surprises me with imaginative additions. Once she mentioned “my brother,” and I nearly fell over laughing—of course she doesn’t have one. It turned out daycare influenced the invention: other children sometimes pray for their brothers.
Once she realized how funny it was to say “my brother,” she began slipping it into prayers with a mischievous grin. One night after I went back in to give her BahBah, her blanket, she said “…and my brother” as I left the room and we both burst into laughter. She’s a silly little trickster and I adore her for it.
It’s August, which means the markets are overflowing with plums. Local farms often carry small red-and-yellow varieties that are incredibly sweet—J’s mom recognized them as similar to the plums she ate on holiday in France. When they’re not being eaten plain, my favorite preparation is a quick plate of plums with goat cheese and walnuts.

This recipe is ridiculously simple: no cooking and minimal prep. I often buy crumbled goat cheese and pre-chopped walnuts to keep things easy. I also love using a mild local honey—this time a blueberry honey from the same farmer who grew the plums. Local ingredients add a fresh, seasonal touch that elevates the dish.

The combination is delightfully balanced: sweet and slightly tart plums, the earthy tang of goat cheese, the crunch of walnuts and the gentle sweetness of honey. It’s a minimalist mix that sings together—fresh, bright and satisfying.
I had to stop photographing because the plate looked so inviting I wanted to dig in immediately. No shame—this one is worth losing a little self-control over. Make it and you’ll see why.
