Halloween Sangria

This recipe is for adults who want a refreshing, lightly sweet sangria to balance out the Halloween candy chaos. I aimed for a “Witches Brew” that looks dark and tastes bright—not cloyingly sweet—so it pairs well with a night of treats.

To achieve that near-black color, I built the drink around blackberries and added black plums and black grapes to maintain the theme and deepen the fruit profile.

For mixers, a cranberry-blackberry juice works beautifully with a red wine base, and a blackberry-flavored sparkling water adds effervescence without extra sweetness.

I tested both a standard red blend and a darker red blend; both were delicious. A regular red blend leans slightly sweeter, while a dark red blend often brings out natural blackberry notes that complement the fruit. Use any red blend you prefer—the recipe is forgiving and easy to adapt.

ingredients need to make the black Halloween sangria recipe

Halloween Blackberry Sangria Recipe

This sangria is simple to prepare. It’s best made a few hours ahead so the fruit can infuse the liquid, but you can also make it quickly and pour over ice if needed.

Ingredients (Yield: 6 servings)

  • 750 mL dark red wine blend or red wine blend
  • 2 cups cranberry-blackberry juice
  • 1 can or bottle blackberry seltzer
  • 6 oz blackberries (about one container)
  • 2 black plums, sliced
  • 1 cup black grapes, halved

Instructions

  1. Prepare the fruit: halve the grapes and slice the plums. Reserve about half the blackberries and gently muddle them in a small bowl with the back of a fork to release more juice and flavor.
  2. Combine all the fruit in a large pitcher.
  3. Pour the wine, cranberry-blackberry juice, and blackberry seltzer over the fruit. Stir gently to combine.
  4. For best results, refrigerate for a few hours so flavors meld. If short on time, serve over ice immediately.

Best served chilled.

Non-alcoholic version for kids

To make an alcohol-free punch that matches the sangria for kids, substitute the bottle of wine with 3 extra cups of cranberry-blackberry juice and add a bit more fruit. Keep both drinks clearly labeled so they don’t get mixed up.

Notes & tips

  • Wine: I used Apothic Red Blend and Apothic Dark during testing; both worked well. Any red blend will be fine based on your sweetness preference.
  • Juice: A cranberry-blackberry juice pairs nicely with the red wine base.
  • Sparkling water: A blackberry-flavored seltzer adds a light fizz without extra sugar.
  • Make ahead: Refrigerate for 2 hours when possible so the fruit infuses the liquid for the best flavor.
