Corinne’s Cornbread Recipe: Classic Southern Corn Bread Tips

Ingredients

1/4 cup sugar (or a little less)
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup cornmeal
4 teaspoons baking powder

Method

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan and set it aside.

Cream the sugar and butter together until the mixture is light and smooth. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then stir in the milk. Combine the egg-and-milk mixture with the creamed butter and sugar.

Sift the flour, cornmeal, and baking powder together to ensure an even texture. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Beat the batter briefly to make it smooth, but avoid overmixing.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated 350°F oven for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the bread rest in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.
