Understanding Blue Light: Effects, Protection, and Eye Health

What it’s doing to your sleep & health, and a simple way to help.

I had LASIK about twelve years ago, so why am I wearing glasses now? For one, I think they look great and help me get into work mode. But the main reason is practical: they block blue light, which can disrupt sleep and, over time, harm your health.

Sleep is when the body rests, repairs, detoxifies, and consolidates memory—it’s essential. Regularly getting less than the recommended 7–9 hours takes a toll on both physical and mental health. If you’re getting by on six hours or fewer, your adrenal system is likely compensating and will eventually struggle to keep up.

Even when we go to bed at a reasonable hour, many of us still struggle to fall or stay asleep.

Many factors influence sleep quality, but a major modern culprit is chronic exposure to blue light. The primary sources are electronic screens and bright artificial lighting such as LED and fluorescent bulbs.

Research indicates that blue light suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate circadian rhythms and signals the body to prepare for sleep.

At the same time, blue light can elevate cortisol, the hormone that promotes alertness and stress responses. Cortisol should be low at night; if it remains elevated, you may experience restless sleep and racing thoughts.

Ideally, avoid screens and bright artificial lights for at least two hours before bed. I know that’s not realistic for everyone—many of us unwind by scrolling social media, watching shows, or working late. If you can dim lights and use candlelight after sunset, that helps. When that’s not possible, a practical alternative is to use blue-light blocking glasses.

Wearing these glasses after sunset, or anytime you spend extended periods on a computer or other devices, can reduce eye strain, minimize screen-related headaches, and support better sleep by limiting blue-light exposure.

Blue-light blocking glasses have helped reduce my eye fatigue, headaches, and improved my sleep.

If you want similar glasses, choose a reputable pair that filters blue light and fits comfortably for extended wear.

Consider using them in the evening and during late-night work sessions to protect your sleep and overall well-being.
