Enjoy Your New Air Fryer with Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets
If you picked up an air fryer recently, you’re not alone — they were one of the season’s hottest gifts. Air fryers make it easy to get a crispy, golden exterior without deep frying, and this crispy chicken nugget recipe is a perfect place to start.
I bought a multi-function unit and love how it replaces several appliances: it sautés, slow cooks, pressure cooks and air fries. It sits on the counter ready for whatever meal I need, and these chicken nuggets work well in any air fryer model.
Why These Nuggets Work So Well
This recipe is flexible and forgiving. You can use boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs. Thighs tend to stay juicier and are less likely to dry out, but breasts work fine if you trim them carefully. The nuggets are marinated in milk and pickle juice, which tenderizes the meat and adds subtle tang, then coated in seasoned flour for a crispy finish when air fried.
Tips for Best Results
- Use boneless, skinless pieces cut into bite-sized chunks.
- Choose thighs to reduce the chance of drying out; remove excess fat first.
- Marinate at least 4 hours or overnight for the best flavor and texture.
- Work in a single layer in the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
- Lightly coat with oil spray before and after flipping to promote even browning.
- Check internal temperature — the nuggets should reach 165°F (74°C).
These nuggets are great with your favorite dipping sauce. If you save fast-food sauce packets, they make a fun nostalgic dip for these homemade nuggets.

Ingredients
- 2 Pounds Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast or Thighs – Cut into Chunks
- 3/4 Cup Milk
- 1/4 Cup Dill Pickle Juice
- 1 Egg, Beaten
- 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour or Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Tsp Salt
- 1 Tsp Paprika
- 1/4 Tsp Black Pepper
- Grapeseed Oil Spray (or neutral cooking spray)
Instructions
- In a large Ziploc bag, combine the milk, dill pickle juice, and beaten egg.
- Add the chicken pieces, seal the bag, and refrigerate to marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight. Place the bag in a bowl or on a tray in case of leaks.
- When ready to cook, mix the flour, salt, paprika, and black pepper in a second Ziploc bag.
- Remove chicken from the marinade, allowing excess to drip off, then add the pieces to the flour mixture bag. Seal and shake until well coated.
- Shake off excess flour and arrange the pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd; cook in batches if needed.
- Lightly coat the nuggets with oil spray. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes, then flip, spray again, and cook an additional 3–4 minutes until golden and crisp. Add extra spray if the coating looks dry.
- Confirm each nugget reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
Air fryer performance varies by model. Start checking nuggets at 8 minutes, and add short increments of time as needed. If cooking multiple batches, later batches may cook slightly faster because the fryer is already hot.
