Ingredients
1 can apple pie filling*
1 tsp. apple pie spice (or 1/2 tsp. cinnamon plus a pinch of nutmeg and cloves)*
1 can refrigerator biscuits
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup sugar mixed with 1–2 tsp. cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Stir the apple pie spice into the canned fruit filling.
- Slice the apple slices from the can into smaller chunks with a knife. (You can press the apples against the can to chop them and avoid using an extra bowl.)
- Flatten each biscuit with a rolling pin or your hand into a roughly 4″ circle.
- Place about 1 slightly rounded tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle.
- Moisten the edges of the biscuit with a little milk, fold into a half-moon, and press the edges to seal. Prick the top a few times with a fork to vent.
- Brush each turnover with melted butter, then dip the top in the sugar-cinnamon mixture.
- Arrange turnovers on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown.
Notes
Variation: Add raisins into the filling for extra texture, or serve warm with a slice of cheddar cheese for a sweet-savory contrast.
*Other fruits: This same method works well with peach, cherry, blueberry, or other canned pie fillings. When using a different filling you can omit the apple pie spice or substitute spices that pair with the chosen fruit (for example, a pinch of cinnamon for peach or a touch of almond flavor with cherry).
These turnovers are best served warm. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and warmed briefly in the oven to refresh the crust.
